this is great
I completely forgot to post this on my account; I figure very late is better than nothing :/ lol
This project was very fun for me. I liked brainstorming a company and trying to come up with a poster design and a typeface that represented them. I was very pleased with my typeface, minus the x,k and v. I wasn’t so much pleased with my poster design, I do have a tendency to over design things and I’ve come a long way but still got a long way to go!
The typeface was created to represent the design company; Experimental Jetset. They are a very clean, simple, intelligent design firm. They almost, always use Helvetica as their typeface for a lot of their designs. They think that since everyone uses it, why fight it, just use it in a different way than everyone else. Helvetica is a very clean, simple, to the point typeface and I wanted to create a typeface that could use these same descriptions. I did not add a serif on to the letterforms because helvetica does not have serifs and it makes it a lot cleaner looking! I decided to go with lower case letters because Experimental Jetset is a fairly young group of people from Amsterdam. The t was created to hang over in letter that was to the left of it because Experimental Jetset like to refer to themselves as “The Jets” off of West Side Story. I thought this was cool and interesting and I wanted to incorporate this into the design because this is definaly a trait that describes them. I got the idea off of the title page for West Side Story. The t hangs over the letter to the left of it and I like this idea and thought it went well with the name. Experimental Jetset makes me think of movement, fast pace and the way the t is designed makes it come across as movement. I wanted to reinterate this concept thru the alphabet to tie it in, so I designed the j,q and t all with extended strokes. I added the little dip at the top of the letters, it wouldn’t be called a serif but maybe it is…(?!?!) because with some letters like the “i” and the “m” right next to each other, the i is very hard cut and to the point so it makes your eye separate that letter form the other two letters it is around but with the little “serif” or “dip”, I’m not sure what to call it, it makes my eye travel. I kinda want to scoot the two letters together like a puzzle piece. Like they were meant to be connected. The “x” was very hard to design. Up close there is a big difference in the traits of it than the other letter forms, but for this project I didn’t want the “x” to stand out form a distance. I made it thick to try to fit the set width of the other letters and it was hard to design the x because of the little boxes and quarter circles we had to use.
In the poster I chose to use the colors black, white and yellow because Experimental Jetset has a very select few color choices. They use a lot of white, black, yellow and red for their designs. I chose yellow because the red, black and white made it feel, to me, like a nazi color arrangement. After Speaker told me to think about if I had to design this in Illustrator, how would i go about it different, I chose to just work with text. I chose to display the name, Experimental Jetset, over and over in different ways; some backwards, some upside down, some completely twisted around, to try and play with the “experiment’ in the name Experimental Jetset. The text being dark at the top and faded to the bottom was to display change, just like in a experiment, your subject changes. The yellow appearing in the text was to display the change within the change. Also this group uses Helvetica for a lot of things but they display it different each time. I wanted to get that across as well. I had the text just cut off right before the title on the poster, Experimental Jetset because I didnt want your eye to continue off the page. I wanted there to be a blunt stop so your eye would not pass over the design firm’s name. I chose to line up the info, centered, under the Design firm’s name because i wanted your eye to continue to mover down after you had read Experimental Jetset. I used Helvetica as my second typeface to help out because that is the main typeface used by Experimental Jetset. I printed the wrong version out to turn in, which I’m sorry for! because it does not use helvetica, it used optima. I feel like a dork lol
I’m recreating this poster for myself, trying to take in the advice I got in class from critique and I want to take out everything at the top. I want to leave the poster completely blank and at the bottom I would still have Experimental Jetset and the information. I would keep the orientation vertical because I want the top to be empty to represent the surface before you experiment. If nothing is there, anything is possible. It leaves a canvas for your mind to draw on, experiment on.
Thanks Garrett! lol I like this!

Pro-Life Poster Project
My goal was to reach the friends of girls who are pregnant and thinking about abortion because very seldom do people make the decision, completely by themselves, to go ahead with the abortion.
Self Type Portrait
When I think of the word rise, I think of becoming. Once your were not and in a moment, you are becoming of something; maybe to become awake from sleep.
My idea of the typeface design really came from the way an alarm clock is set up. An alarm clock has 8 points that form the letters. On each letter in the exact spot, besides the “i”, are 8 dots, for the most part, that are in the same spot. Some have some dots missing in the 8 point setup because the “r” doesn’t wrap all the way around in order to hit all 8 dots. The reason I chose to put angles on all the sides of the letters on top is to reiterate my word rise. All set widths are the same, just like an alarm clock, besides the i.I started with the “e” first and then made the “s” and then the “r” and I made the ”i” from the “r”. The letters are minuscule because in the morning, things are quiet for me. I am not a morning person so I would not want someone being loud and I felt the majuscule letters would have defeated this purpose. I chose black and white color because in the mornings, things come alive very slowly. A burst of color is not what i see. Im blind before i put in my contacts and I’m up before sunrise, so things are still very black and white for me. The main focus beside my letter in each panel is the eye. I chose to show the eye in every shot from a different angle to represent tossing and turning in hopes of representing someone sleeping. In the last panel I chose to have the eye open to represent the becoming part. I wrote each letter on a different part of the arm and hand because through the night, while most people sleep, their arms go everywhere; on their heads, chest, stomach, off the bed, over their eyes, etc… I chose to write the letters in liquid eyeliner because it seemed like the best way to transform the dots onto my subject. It was a lot harder than what I thought it was going to be!
